Introduction

In the 1990s I studied Industrial Design, where I learned about human-centred design and design thinking. This gave me a solid foundation for understanding user needs.

These concepts have since informed what we now refer to as product design in the digital world.

Discover

Understand the problem

Exploring the problem space through research and observation.

Understand users’ needs, behaviours, and the broader context of the challenge.

Gather insights through interviews, data and competitor analysis.

Define

Clarify the challenge

Synthesise insights to clearly articulate the core problem.

Identify patterns, reframe the challenge, and agree on a design brief.

Ensure a specific, well-understood issue that’s meaningful and actionable.

Explore, test and implement solutions

Brainstorm, sketch, prototype, and test a range of possible solutions.

Be creative and iterative.

Explore experimentation and feedback to refine concepts and find the most promising approaches.
